When and how to seek professional help for mental health problems?

Seeking professional help for mental health problems is an important step to take when attempts to cope on your own do not produce the desired results or when symptoms negatively impact daily functioning. The first step may be a visit to your family doctor, who will assess your health and may refer you to an appropriate specialist, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. Available forms of support include counseling, psychotherapy and group support. Counseling and psychotherapy offer an individual approach and work on solving specific problems. Therapy can take place in various forms, depending on needs and preferences, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based therapy. Group support allows you to share experiences with others who are struggling with similar problems, which can bring relief and a sense of understanding. There are many organizations and initiatives offering help to people struggling with depression and stress. In Poland, such support is offered by, among others: ITAKA Foundation, Support Center for People in Psychological Crisis, as well as numerous psychological and psychiatric clinics available under the National Health Fund. It's important to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and there are resources ready to support people who need help.
