In the previous article in this series, we pointed out that in addition to the educational level, the appropriate specialization offer and the availability of learning specific languages, when choosing a school, it is also important to pay attention to the level of psychological safety in a given institution, which we wrote about in the previous article.
It may seem that a good school is a better start to studies, but if we assess its level only through the prism of high school leaving exam results, we will not see the whole truth. We will also not know whether, apart from book knowledge, the students left this school mentally and socially stronger, or whether they set out into the world with good well-being and healthy relationships.
Today we want to encourage you to take a closer look at the atmosphere in the schools you want to apply for.
The reputation of the high school you are applying to
We usually start assessing potential schools by checking how the institution fares in educational rankings and what its students' results are in external exams. We focus on future opportunities for further education: how the school prepares students for high school leaving exams and further education, especially if we already have specific plans for higher education.
Secondly, we check the curricula and specializations, comparing them with our interests (e.g. international programs, classes with a mathematics and natural sciences, humanities, languages, arts profile). At this point, we strongly encourage you to analyze extracurricular opportunities: what clubs, extracurricular activities and sports the school offers. Extracurricular activities can be an important element of personal and professional development.
We consider all this important, but we highly recommend that you also conduct your own "investigation" to learn as much as possible about the school atmosphere and environment.
Let's look for opinions of graduates and parents. Check out the profile on social media. See what events the school presents and what values the school promotes. Read comments from current students and former students of the school. Maybe you found someone you know among your followers? Ask him questions about things that interest you.
Positive atmosphere and supportive environment
It really is important that the school where you spend many hours a day for several years has a positive atmosphere that promotes the academic and social development of students. You can visit the school during open days or search through friends and talk to current students to find out more about the school culture.
Based on the analysis of the school's website, social media and conversations with people who know a given school, you can find out whether the school offers additional support, such as career counseling, psychological support, or learning assistance for students who need it. Analysis of school website and materials: The official website and published materials (e.g. school newspaper, brochures) can provide information about events, student achievements and the overall school climate.
Talking to current students or recent graduates can give you a realistic picture of school life. These people can share their experiences and observations about teachers, peers and the general atmosphere. Sometimes we come across unpleasant opinions from trolls on internet forums, but it is worth getting through them and listening to the opinion of the community. Focus groups can provide valuable opinions and comments about a particular school. Remember, however, that these opinions may be subjective and should be treated as one of many sources of information.
Checking the atmosphere at school before starting your studies there may be crucial to making the right decision. You can do it e.g. like this:
Go to an Open Day: Many schools hold open days where you can tour the facility, meet teachers and students, and see what a typical day at school is like. This is a great opportunity to feel the school atmosphere.
Meet with teachers and management as needed: Direct contact with teachers and school management can help you understand the school's approach to educating and caring for students.
Attend school events: If possible, attending public events organized by the school, such as plays, concerts or sports days, can give you an insight into the school culture and atmosphere, especially if you have older friends at school. Ask them about such events and the possibility of participating.
Seek information from parents of other students: Parents of students currently attending the school can share their observations and experiences.
Visit the school on a regular school day: If possible (check entry policies), visit the school on a regular school day. Observing how students and teachers behave during breaks, what lessons are like and the general interest in learning can be very informative.
